FAQs

Everything you need to know to actually use Ultra Fuel Tracker, starting with the five minutes before you press start.

Getting started +

Much like training for the miles themselves, getting the most out of Ultra Fuel Tracker starts with putting in your targets before you ever hit start. It all happens on the Setup tab, and it only takes a minute.

You'll set up:

  1. Race or long run? Tag the session so it's easy to find later. And if it's a long run, you'll get a quick feel-check when you stop the clock.
  2. Start time. What time are you starting this badass effort? This is what powers all the hour-by-hour tracking.
  3. Fluid target. How many ounces per hour are you aiming for? You can always adjust this later if conditions change (say, once the sun goes down and you slow into a walk).
  4. Calorie target. Your hourly calorie goal.
  5. Carb target. Grams of carbs you're aiming for, each hour.
  6. Sodium target. Same idea, for electrolytes.
  7. Caffeine. Because we all need it at some point.

Each field comes with a built-in suggestion based on what works for most ultras, but they're just a starting point. You know your own gut and your own race better than any preset does, so adjust as needed.

That's the whole setup. Once your targets and start time are in, the Fuel dashboard takes over, telling you in real time whether you're on track the moment you actually need to know it.

Can I change my targets mid-event? +

Conditions change during a long effort, and your targets should be able to change with them. What you need at high noon on an 85-degree day looks nothing like what you'll want at 2am, eighteen hours in.

You can adjust any target mid-event, right from Setup. When you do, your already-logged hours keep comparing against whatever target was active at the time. They don't get rewritten. Only the hours after the change get judged against the new number. So if you drop your calorie target going into the night, that's what you're expected to hit going forward, not a re-grading of how the day already went.

How do I test the app without an event? +

You don't need an event on the calendar to try this out. Start the timer any time (even right when you wake up), and as time passes, the Fuel tab will tell you whether you're ahead of or behind your targets.

Head over to the Log tab, add a few of the pre-filled fuel items, and watch the numbers move on the dashboard in real time.

What does the Hourly tab show me? +

This is where you go to dig into the numbers. Across the top, you'll find each metric. Tap any one to switch what the hourly bars are showing.

Tap a specific hour's bar to expand it and see a full snapshot of where you landed against every target for that hour, plus exactly what you logged.

Do I need to download anything? +

Nope. Ultra Fuel Tracker runs entirely in your phone's browser: Android, iPhone, whatever you've got, as long as it can load a webpage. There's nothing to install and no app store to find it in.

Does this work without cell service? +

Short answer: yes, as long as you load the app once while you still have signal. Ultra Fuel Tracker is a progressive web app (PWA), so once it's open in your browser, everything runs locally: the food kit, logging, the rings, the hourly breakdown, saving your data, even the PDF export. None of that needs an internet connection.

The one exception is the USDA food search on the Log tab (the "Search USDA or add custom" button), and that does need a connection, so adding something new on the fly in a dead zone won't work. The fix is easy: before you head out, think through what you'll actually find at aid stations and add those items to your kit in advance. Race directors usually publish their aid station spreads ahead of time, so you can build your kit around what's actually going to be there.

The practical version:

  1. Load the app once while you've got signal: at home, in the car, or at the start line. This downloads everything the browser needs.
  2. From there, don't force-close the tab while you're in a dead zone, and you're fine: tapping food, logging fluids, salt, caffeine, hydration checks, viewing your rings and hourly data, all of it keeps working with zero connection.

The one thing to avoid: don't force-quit the browser tab or restart your phone mid-event while you're somewhere with no signal. That forces a fresh page load, which needs a connection to happen. Locking your phone or switching to another app is totally fine; the tab stays alive in memory either way.

Where's my data? +

It's safe with you, and only you. Ultra Fuel Tracker is a progressive web app that runs in your browser and logs everything locally, on your device.

We have no idea who's using the app, what fuel they're logging, or whether they hit their targets. Your data belongs to you, and whoever you choose to share it with, like your crew or your coach. No one else.

How do I add fuel to my kit? +

On the Log tab, right below the pre-filled items, you'll find an Add to Kit option. Add as many items as you want. We'd suggest building your kit out before your event so everything's ready to tap and log on the day.

What happens when I'm done? +

You celebrate first. That's the important part.

After that, you can export your full session as a PDF and email it to yourself, your coach, or anyone else who helped get you there. This is especially useful after a training long run: you'll be testing out different fuel options, and when you're done, you'll have the receipts on which ones actually worked, and which ones (looking at you, Snickers bars) really didn't.
